Frequently Asked Questions

How long are classes?

All classes are 1 hour long, broken down into a warm-up, teaching technique, short drills and a cool down.

What do I need to bring?

Classes require different gear, but in general, please bring a water bottle! Optional: sweat towel, hair tie, cup, mouth guard, sparring gear, boxing gloves and wrist wraps.

It’s my first time taking self-defense. What should I know?

Self-defense is a practical, fun, and challenging undertaking. While it can be intimidating to step into your first class, our community and instructors are supportive; we remember our first time, too! You will be doing some close-contact drills and working up a sweat.

Please mention any injuries, discomforts, or limitations to the instructor before the start of class. Our instructors practice trauma-informed techniques and value your privacy.

What should I wear?

Pants or workout leggings and a t-shirt work best. Fight shorts are also acceptable. Optional: hair tie, cup, and mouth guard. Please no zippers, watches, dangling jewelry, or exposed velcro, as these can impede drills. For additional gear, please see individual class requirements.

Can I wear shoes?

We train barefoot in our classes and have a no-shoe policy on the mats, with the exception of wrestling shoes.

What are the COVID precautions?

All Third Gate instructors, staff, and guests must follow federal, state, and local guidance regarding COVID-19 precautions.
